“Divergent Ascendant,” the fourth and the last film in “The Divergent” series, will open on the big screen next Summer. While it is not canceled, contrary to reports, it has already met ugly news about its reduced budget.
Based on The Hollywood Reporter’s report, the budget for the fourth installment has been cut significantly. While there were no exact figures given, the budget cut is believed to be at least several millions of dollars. Given the reported value of “Divergent,” which was $85 million, as well as ““ Divergent Allegiant” and ““ Divergent Insurgent,” which is $110 million, the final movie installment may be near the first movie’s budget.
In “Divergent Ascendant,” critics blamed the film’s budget cut to the studio’s decision to split the Veronica Roth’s trilogy into two films. While they believed that “Divergent Allegiant” may have been too stretched out, the fans of the novel think that the third film was the weakest among the series. Having earned a total of $29 million only over the opening weekend, “Divergent Allegiant” has the lowest movie gross in the franchise so far, The Guardian reported.
The character of Theo James, Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller will be seen again in the fourth and final title. However, director Robert Schwentke will not be returning to direct the film, and will be replaced instead by Lee Toland Krieger. Moreover, the script is still being written to make new adjustments based on the latest budgetary constraints imposed by Summit and Lionsgate.
“Divergent Ascendant” is expected to face a tough competition in the box office. Until now, all movies have dropped in March, although the final chapter is due in mid Summer, June 9, 2017, the same opening day for the Tom Cruise movie “The Mummy” and Brad Pitt’s “World War Z 2”. With that being said, it would not be a surprise if the final movie of the Divergent series will be moved to a different opening date.
